The first recognized backrest we have found is shown below - in the US Patent Office - and dates June 11, 1889 - 124 years ago.
In the 1950 era - these backrests were seen virtually everywhere on every beach in the U.S.

In the 1950´s everyone had the classic backrest - then the concept was lost into oblivion - there were not any available for decades.
The product has been "revived" with the added tote bag - a nice addition. Sitting directly on the sand is not for everyone - yet many enjoy the feel and custom "dig-out" for maximum sitting comfort.
